Demonstration of sprites generated by Pixelship, a procedural pixel-art spaceship generator. It is a small shooter, but the shooting is not the point - the ships are.

Every ship you see here was generated, not drawn. The player's fighter, all seven enemy families and their colour schemes come out of the same generator, from a seed shown in the corner. Change the seed and you get a different fleet.

What it is actually showing

A sprite is easy. What is hard is everything a game needs to know about the sprite, and that is the part this demo exists to prove:

  • Shots leave the guns. Bullets spawn from the ship's real gun mount coordinates, not from the middle of the sprite. When a wing tilts, its gun tilts with it and the shots follow.
  • Exhaust comes from the thrusters. Real nozzle positions, and the flame responds to how hard you are pushing.
  • Turning is a rotation. Banking uses the generator's own height field to rotate the hull about its long axis, so the near wing covers the far one. It is not a horizontal squash.
  • Two enemy families have no guns at all and simply ram you, because the generator honestly did not give them any. Nothing here is hand-authored to make the demo look good.

Controls

Arrow keys or WASD to move, space to fire, R for an entirely new fleet. The seed of the current fleet is shown in the corner.
